Good morning/afternoon/evening wherever you may be.
Those of you whom are familiar with me know I am in love with free free free software. So I often try to enlighten my readers about not only the availability of software but also it’s most effective useage.
SIDE NOTE. when you clean your browsing history/user assist files/prefetch data/caches etc. your machine is cleaner more efficient and safer, however your next browsing session will not have saved site passwords and may load a bit slower (how much slower depends on your variables eg.; your ISP/the SERVERS YOU CONNECT TO/your COMPUTERS HARDWARE/your NETWORK LOAD/your BANDWIDTH etc…So it is up to you to decide which is more important to you. I personally do not mind waiting a few tenths of a second more for a page to load,(but) and also some sites require cookies enabled for them to load as well as associated programs (snippets,pop-ups etc.),ccleaner does not block cookies but it removes the stored ones.(this is not a security discussion so I kept it short about browsing history and stored passwords)
I find that often people have heard of a particular software and may even have it downloaded and residing on their hard-drive,however this does not mean they are privvy to the most effective usage and innate power of some very simple programs. Piriform’s “ccleaner” , (the topic of this particular days blog) came to mind for me as a friend of mine has it on their machine but knows little of it’s true power and abilities.
Before I start to expound I remind you all I am simply a power-user with many years of experience concerning computers, I do not claim to be a programmer (although I have programming in my background) see my disclaimer.
Piriform’s ccleaner does a host of useful functions that you can certainly do yourself if you are a power-user or uber-user or above; however it puts the tools effectively in a nice simple format and allows you to do it all from one program. The most common uses for ccleaner would be getting rid of junk files such as cookies /browsing history/temp files/unused or broken registry files/wiping free drive space of broken fragments etc…(not to be confused with defraggler also by Piriform)I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH PIRIFORM IN ANY WAY,NOR DO I RECEIVE ANY COMPENSATION FOR ADVOCATING THIS SOFTWARE!
If you remember, there was a time years ago when you had to go to “msconfig” or “regedit”and handle these problems manually and sometimes I still do just to make sure ccleaner is doing what I told it to do.( as a side note to neophytes do not play with your registry manually!)
I am going to stray off topic for a second to explain for the new and/or normal users some of the commands which they can access, but probably should not attempt to use. Remember knowledge is power, I will impart the knowledge if I am able; but I am not advocating your use of it until you know what you are doing.
That being said, here is a short list of commands that are useful to access behind the scenes on your C drive; different OS’s have easier ways of accessing these now and I am speaking to the windows contingent at this point.
These are general descriptions because some of these have several tabs with multiple functions and capabilities under each tab,but I want you to see why ccleaner makes alot of this knowledge unnecessary and much safer for the uninitiated. Skip to the bottom of the descriptions if this tech stuff bores you . I wouldn’t blame you,but having this knowledge may be very valuable for some of you newbies.
These commands are accessible from the start button’s search bar/window primarily xp,vista and window’s 7 would be concerned these days.
MICROSOFT CONFIGURATION -”msconfig” allows you to decide what services,programs,drivers to start automatically and or to launch immediately or stop.
DEVICE MANAGER – “devmgmt.msc” allows you to see installed devices in order to disable/enable devices for trouble shooting,update drivers,view drivers,also find driver residence and microsoft compatibility of your machines devices which is very useful.
NETWORK CONNECTIONS -”ncpa.cpl”- simply shows your network connections but you can see this file without windows if necessary.
DNS CLIENT – “services.msc” gives a detailed description of your services and how they start etc. very useful if you need to manually start or stop a service or reconfigure it, or just find out if you need it running at all.
COMMAND PROMPT- “cmd.exe” most of you have heard of “DOS” but have never or never needed to work with it this century, probably at most you went to the DOS shell. In any event this is how you open the C prompt. Read “DOS for dummies” it is still the bible so far as DOS is concerned to me.
DEFAULT IMPERSONATION LEVEL-”dcomcnfg” services and event viewer can be accessed from here but the biggy for me is COMPONENT SERVICES which I will not explain here as it is involved and you can mess things up.
REGISTRY EDITOR- “regedit” you can manipulate your registry, again I WARN YOU NOT TO DO THIS unless you have professional help or training. However it is your machine and you have the right to know.
Ok, there are many more but I think that is enough for today and I think they are the most important basics,we will discuss file recovery and restore points etc. on another day; for now back to ccleaner.
When you first turn on ccleaner you will have to configure it to your specifications and after that it is virtually maintenance free and automatic for the most part. You will notice different categories with hash mark boxes you can check or uncheck; for my own uses I have all checked with the exceptions of “FTP ACCTS” and “WIPE FREE DRIVE SPACE” If you transfer alot of p2p stuff i suggest you manage your ftp accounts manually for your business and personal sites but that is up to your discretion, also the wipe free drive space is an inordinately long process so do it at night or whenever your computers downtime is available. Under the “advanced” heading you may not want to clean anything that you don’t know its meaning although I have used it for years without damage,still better safe than sorry if you have trepidation.
So you have cleaned all your browser files and etc. and are feeling good about your machine and yourself.
WOOHOO! tell your grandmother and your son you’re a computer god… Now you go down to the next category on the left side of ccleaner and it says “registry” and your palms start to sweat because I and others have told you not to mess with it (and rightly so). You can continue with security and confidence because ccleaner will offer you the opportunity to make a back up automatically with the push of a button (more correctly a click) this is a wise thing to do just in case! Make sure you take note where your files are being sent, you can choose a location or let the default take them to documents as a .txt file.
Then simply scan and after backing up you can safely remove the broken or unused files. At this point most users are done and that is fine. However this was what I truly wanted to impart today at least once a week or after a day of downloading programs I am not totally familiar with,I go to the tools section of ccleaner and first I look at my start-up items…LO AND BEHOLD some free program or perhaps even one I paid for had some other toolbar or associated program that I inadvertently accepted or was forced to accept.
DON’T YOU HATE IT WHEN THEY CHANGE YOUR HOMEPAGE AND TOOLBAR?! ARGH!!!
You can now easily look at the program and it’s author and the date you received it (which to me is important)if I do not recognise the program and I downloaded it weeks or months ago or in my case years ago and it is still on my hard drive, let alone in my start-up folder it must DIE DIE DIE! (chuckles with satisfaction at killing toolbars)seriously this is a useful screen and allows you to monitor your machine for all sorts of useless and potentially conflicting or harmful software.
Ok, from this tools screen you started on uninstall tab by default but, I suggest going to start up first and then to uninstall and also of course you can wipe drive space manually from here. They were also kind enough to put system restore on this page for those of you who sometimes drink and compute and need to fix a faux pas= MAJOR BOO BOO!
So my major thrust here is to keep tabs on your start-up programs it slows your computer down and also inadvertently downloaded add-ons and associated files/programs.
